The second year of Minnehaha Avenue’s reconstruction is scheduled to begin in about two months (depending on weather). The road will be closed to through traffic and reconstructed in two main stages:

April to August: 38th to 34th Street
August to November: 34th to Lake Street

Local traffic: Local traffic will be able to use fully paved streets and walkways on all areas except the four blocks under construction. Access to businesses and residences will remain available in the four block segment under construction, though surfaces may not be paved or smooth at all times.

Crossing Minnehaha Avenue: Travelers will be able to cross Minnehaha Avenue at intersections not closed for reconstruction during construction. With the exception of Lake Street, intersections will be fully closed for approximately ten days to allow for construction in and/or around the intersection. Travelers may cross at other locations during these intersection closures.

The City of Minneapolis has posted its preferred layout for 38th Street between Hiawatha to Minnehaha avenues.  The new roadway is proposed to include a variety of treatments to make it more pedestrian and bicyclist friendly, including on-street bike lanes, street lighting, and wide grassy boulevards between the sidewalk and road.

Construction is planned for 2016.  More information is available on the City of Minneapolis’ project website.

Construction on Minnehaha Avenue is scheduled to begin this spring.  Because of the need for extensive underground utility work, the county plans to close the road in four-block segments; however, people will still have access to residential and business driveways.

Estimated construction and road closure dates:

  • 46th – 42nd streets:  April to July 2015
  • 42nd – 38th streets:  July to November 2015
  • 38th – 34th streets:  April to July 2016
  • 34th – Lake streets:  July to November 2016

What can you look forward to on the new Minnehaha Avenue?

  • Turn lanes added at key nodes to ease traffic flow
  • Curb extensions to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and improve visibility
  • Enhanced bike lanes to give cyclists a more comfortable ride
  • More pedestrian and street-level lighting to enhance the feeling of safety
  • On-street parking for businesses, residents, and visitors
  • Trees and stormwater improvements to enhance the environment and aesthetics
  • Street furnishings and colored concrete treatment at key nodes to create a pedestrian-friendly sense of place
