Construction on Minnehaha Avenue is scheduled to begin this spring.  Because of the need for extensive underground utility work, the county plans to close the road in four-block segments; however, people will still have access to residential and business driveways.

Estimated construction and road closure dates:

  • 46th – 42nd streets:  April to July 2015
  • 42nd – 38th streets:  July to November 2015
  • 38th – 34th streets:  April to July 2016
  • 34th – Lake streets:  July to November 2016

What can you look forward to on the new Minnehaha Avenue?

  • Turn lanes added at key nodes to ease traffic flow
  • Curb extensions to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and improve visibility
  • Enhanced bike lanes to give cyclists a more comfortable ride
  • More pedestrian and street-level lighting to enhance the feeling of safety
  • On-street parking for businesses, residents, and visitors
  • Trees and stormwater improvements to enhance the environment and aesthetics
  • Street furnishings and colored concrete treatment at key nodes to create a pedestrian-friendly sense of place

38th Street reconstruction planned

The City of Minneapolis is planning a full reconstruction of 38th Street between Minnehaha and Hiawatha avenues in 2016.

This project was identified as a priority in the Minnehaha-Hiawatha Community Works framework document to support multi-modal access and economic vitality in the area.  The current roadway is an important connection to the 38th Street LRT station from the Longfellow neighborhood.  However, the road lacks boulevards, trees, lighting, and bike facilities which support pedestrian and bike access to the station.

The project is in the preliminary design phase.  Minneapolis will be holding an informational meeting to get comments and answer questions on the project:

  • Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2014
  • Time: 5:00 pm
  • Location: Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church
  • Address: 4101 37th Avenue South

Check the project website for more information.

Both the Hiawatha intersection improvement project and the landscape restoration project are essentially complete.  All 350 trees have been installed in the corridor. Construction on the intersections — including the bump-outs, medians, and crosswalks — has been completed.  The bike lanes and symbols along 32nd have been installed.

Remaining items include:

  • The City of Minneapolis will be installing the pedestrian push buttons at 42nd and 46th streets by the end of September.  The southside crosswalk of 46th Street will remain closed until the push buttons and walk signals can be installed.
  • Our project landscapers will continue to water and maintain the trees along Hiawatha until the summer of 2016.  Trees are covered by a 2-year warranty.  Any trees that did not survive the initial transplant are planned for replacement in September 2014.

Construction is beginning this week on the intersection improvements along Hiawatha Avenue.  The contractors will start with the median work — beginning at 32nd Street and working their way south to 46th Street.   The median work is scheduled to take approximately three weeks.

Upon completion of the medians, construction will move to the side streets.  We will have additional information as construction continues.  There may be traffic impacts for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists during the construction.  Check the project web page for updates throughout the project.

Our project consultants have completed the final design for the proposed intersection improvements along Hiawatha Avenue.   We are getting final signatures on the project funding agreements, and the project is expected to go out for bid in the winter.   The initial project would include 32nd, 38th, 42nd, and 46th streets — 35th and 28th streets could be added depending on the final bids.

We expect to begin construction in spring 2014.  Click on Project Update for the latest intersection designs.
